Excellent point. I rarely use IE, but...

... even so, I admit that there may not be what most IT directors
would regard as a compelling business case for switching to
Firefox.

It's a simple fact that such a switch would entail additional costs
-- anyone who says otherwise is not thinking it through:

* You can't drop your virus scanning software because that risk
still exists;
* You can't stop patching IE as long as it's still installed on
people's systems. The systems are still vulnerable, even if people
don't explicitly use the software.
* You could remove IE from everyone's system, but that poses
configuration maintenance issues and incurs an extra set of
operational difficulties (and related costs) from dealing with IE-
only sites. (And they are legion, and many compatability
problems go much deeper than simply spoofing the user agent.)
* You have additional cost to deploy and maintain Firefox (or
whatever), on top of what you'd have to do to maintain your
windows base.

"Don't use Windows" is, of course, not really a valid counter-
argument. They do use it. All questions of Firefox's viability only
make sense in the context of what people actually use.
