You should come and see our AD
I wouldn't suprise me if you've never seen a good remote deployment setup, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

We deploy every piece of standard software via AD. It works 99.99% of the time. That 00.001% of failures are caused by people powering off their PC during installs/upgrades.

Office (starting with 2000 five years ago - 2k3 right now)
Acrobat Reader 7
java JRE 1.5
Macromedia Flash
Macromedia Shockwave
And two specialized vendor specific apps which we repackaged into msi format

A bare XP clone for our new machines contains no software - just Windows XP. They also contain no tweaks - just a default install with default settings. AD is used for any customizations to the configuration of the OS - most notably security tweaks, such as allowing users to manage their power management settings.

Software is deployed from mirrored shares on a DFS, which means one policy can be used for machines on all physical sites.

The biggest problem I see with people AD installations is that the people running them don't understand how AD works. Because they don't understand what makes AD tick, they are not able to properly plan out their AD layout to make use of the featues of group policy.

Back to the firefox issue. Repackaging it into an MSI or using a third party msi is certainly an option, but at least for me, the reasons are not compelling enough to warrant the extra support issues involved with maintaining your own, or using an unsupported package. We allready repackage two applications, but we *need* those apps on 500 PC's spread accross 5 locations.

The primary benefit of firefox is security, but our users already run as limited users, and thus the security pitfalls of IE are severely reduced anyway.
