But if you call a cash register a point of sales system the price goes up dramatically.

My best guess is this. A point of sale system connects to database that takes into account when you sell inventory. Where as a cashregister just takes cash and does things more book keeping. But like I said this is just a guess but remember to look at from a user stand point not a developer stand point. From the dev side I'm guessing they are pretty much the same thing. But not the same when you are buying them. It's silly really.
