It depends on the company
Simple like you describe works in some operations where raw sales totals at the end of the day is all that's needed. However, others require more real time inventory tracking and CRM details. This requires a more complete and complex method to pass information around between the home office and locations and may require graphical information.

Also, as I mentioned before, a lot of the standard Windows "Bells and Whistles" get turned off or locked down in this kind of environment. On the system I did it was hard to visually tell what OS it was running under while in 'sales associate' mode. No salesperson was going to be surfing the web or playing solitare from one of those boxes!
