I'm not sure where you put the separation...
between a 'cash register' and 'point of sale' system. I'd be inclined to say a cash register is more of a standalone unit with limited data communication and reporting capability while a POS would be integrated into a network and be capable of doing more than just logging sales, for example, inventory tracking and CRM integration.
