I did a POS system in Windows 2 years ago
Security is essentially a non-issue under Win2K since the system is so locked down through system policies and disabling unused services. No, you weren't going to be browsing the web or opening email attachments with these systems.

However, in retrospect, I think that a Linux system would have been a better option. This is mainly because of the cost. The company in question was going to be deploying about 800 POS stations and each had to have a Win2K Pro license plus one Win2k Server and SQL Server license per store. I'd assume the initial costs on a Linux distro and MySQL would have been astronomical lower, right?

The only problem would have been what to develop the POS code in. If it had to be plain text based, then, sure, C++ would work. However, we had substantial graphical and touchscreen requirements plus a tight development schedule that screamed for a rapid development tool. So, a question for you Linux fans out there. What development tool would you have recommended that would have allowed for rapid development of a complex graphical touchscreen POS UI and that leveraged existing skills in C++ (light to moderate), VB (moderate to heavy), and Java (moderate)?
