I disagree
I have a USB video capture card and USB ATI remote, and it does everything I would ever want to ask out of a living room media player. The remote is radio, not infrared, so you can enclose the Mini and the USB receiver and still get excellent reception. I used to have to expose the receiver for keyboard and mouse, which did need line of sight, but since upgrading to bluetooth keyboard and mouse even that problem is gone.
