Heck, look at a Mac Mini
I used to have a tower Pentium III computer with Windows and Linux hooked up to my HDTV, and like you say it ran hot and loud. I now have a x86 Mac Mini in its place, which is quieter than the TV itself, it's small and cool enough to keep inside the entertainment center door, plus with my ATI remote you don't need line of site to use the remote (which I did not need before either). Plus now I have the choice of using just about any OS of my choosing, although for now I'm still using OS X, just to get the hang of it.
