This isn't about operating systems
I prefer Linux, even though the public's collective uncounscious knows only about Windows, but they both exist and either can do the job. I won't jump on the bandwagon of my OS can beat up your OS. That would be missing the point.

As Rod Fleck said, it's about standards. It's about consumer devices that a PC or other controller has to talk with, and there is no interoperational standards between them. That's the biggest problem.

Want a PC in the bedroom? Take the guts out of a laptop computer and put it into a nice-looking case that sits on the bookshelf. Problem solved and energy-efficient, to boot.

Still won't solve the problem of working with a DVD, stereo receiver, graphic equalizer, and HDTV that all have different interfaces. Some progress has been made. More needs to be done.

Like USB has addressed a variety of serial connection configurations and protocols, new consumer devices should adopt a common interface and command architecture. Mass-produce control chips so every device can have one, build a core command library in Java or other device-independent language, and distribute it freely to any developer or manufacturer. Voila: "Appliance Control Efficiency Standard 1.0".

It would take a few years to build a new generation of standard devices, but eventually you'll be able to control anything from anywhere.

Opens a lot of possibilites for spin-off businesses, too: ACES-to-infrared remote control translator; appliance control applet for your cell phone; "scene" scripting software for your PC; integration with your other home automation tools; etc.

Hey, why am I telling you guys all this. I'm patenting it!
