It's called HAVi...coming to your home soon!

It uses IEEE-1394 (Firewire) to connect components together and has a standard defined for communication and control.  Basicaly take the rats nest from behind your TV and replace it with one cable that can be daisy chained between each component.  Signals can also be sent over CAT5 wire to the entire home.

Audio, Video, Data, and other control signals are sent through one wire from component to component.

What you get is a simple interconnection method and ONE remote control to control all components.  A component in a different room can be controlled through the IR sensor on a component in the room your presently in.  You can turn your teenager's music down from your easy chair!
