The k-12 system feeds your colleges, so how are they questionable?
I'm tired of hearing that our K-12 system is questionable, broken, inferior, staffed by "those who can't", etc, etc etc. According to the Mac folks, you get what you pay for, so if they are correct, I guess the education system is sub-par. On the other hand, the education system deals with parental non-involvement and apathy, kids who are out of control, an economic system where a Taco Bell manager makes more than a teacher, and yet we are expected to inspire and teach the little cretins how to succeed? And if we actually dare to try to discipline a kid, the parents come unglued and try to by-pass the system by getting a lawyer in to protect their little criminal's right to take a test he missed because he decided to skip a class, drive off with a 14 year old girl in his car, and go smoke a little weed and impregnate her?
Then we get his 20% test score lumped in with all our other scores, and we compare them against the top 30% of the Japanese and German students, and wonder why we look bad? See, they already sent their weed smoker types to vocational school, so they can become the Mercedes and Toyota factory workers of the future. Meanwhile I am expected to turn MY pothead student into a college bound, calculus capable, english essay writing US High School grad, because God forbid we decide he's unfit for college. After all, he could become the president! As long as he stays out of the Army and whatever war we are in.
