One problem with this
---People need to understand that using someone elses work
comes the responsiblity of paying whatever costs the creator
asks for in return, or don't use the creation---

I agree that this is a reasonable philosophy, the problem comes
from the current state of software patents, and the ability to
patent "business practices" or other such ideas. Let's say I need
a particular function on my business' website. Someone sells a
product that provides it. I now have the choice of compensating
them, or not using their product. But let's say they're asking for
a ridiculous amount of money for their product, an amount I
can't afford. Obviously, the answer would be for me (or
someone else) to create our own product that provides the same
function (not stealing from their code, but independently
producing the product). Under current law, this is going to
cause you problems, as the first company has already patented
the general idea of the function.

What's an honest person to do?
