Checks and balances

The anti-trust case had some attention to checks and balances on a monopoly.

Though the case also included an embarrassing manipulation of the government to get the case started and pushed along. Remember the private detective hired by one of the conspirators... ahm... competitors to dive into Microsoft's garbage? That is embarrassing.

The case made another significant difference in the way that the IT industry deals with government: when it began Microsoft had one part-time lobbyist in Washington. The industry now knows that competition is partly a government activity.

Your best protection against price gouging is the market.

Microsoft justifies charging the same amount for Windows by putting more and more into the operating system.

And the OEMs, the principal buyers of Windows, often sell on the basis of price. If Microsoft were to charge so much that the OEMs had to choose between lower sales or lower profits, then they would be displeased with Microsoft.

So that $50 per copy OEM charge appears likely to last through the years.



The documentation issues being discussed have to do with making available protocol documentation in a form acceptable to the recipients.

The issue has nothing to do with price gouging, but only with competitors who don't know any more than Microsoft employees about Windows.
