I did comment that the former owners of the startup would become rich. The employees would become Microsoft employees, buying all the plates and coasters with the Microsoft crest from the company gift shop to show their pride and satisfaction.

Microsoft, too, would be pleased because of the improvement to the technology the company is able to offer the public.

That's an unselfish satisfaction in making a better product, because Microsoft can make sales in some software markets without competition thanks to the way Linux and other open source projects have prevented profitable competitors from arising.

You can think of Linux as the single most important guarantor of Microsoft's desktop monopoly. Except in the case of you and your close circle of personal friends, of course, LU.
