I think Sun is looking to branch out
I Think Sun is looking to expand it's market. Right now Sun is restricted to enterprise solutions and by going with Ubuntu over Debian they are looking for a PNP solution that will go on desktops for home or office use. That will expand their market base and get their logo in the faces of the general public. Without it there really isn't a large distribution alternative to MS.
