Nice to flame bait once in a while
Gentoo is interesting, but its pretty raw (cli "laundry list" configuration process). I am a Mandriva fan myself. Great tools, works flawlessly.

Debian is a fork of Linux in the sense that if there is something done a certain way somewhere else, Debian goes and does its own thing. Software packaging is one area - DEB and apt-get, whereas RPM, sysV, Slackware packages already existed. There were also some "new" names and locations for configuration files that were unfamiliar to me (and I am versed in Solaris, SunOS, Ultrix, OSF1, HP-UX, IRIX, AIX, DeadRat Linux, SuSE, Mandriva, ...). That tells ME that its a fork.

Is it the "best" Linux distro? Lets say this, "What is your definition of the word "best""?
