I definitely think Synaptic is pretty slick compared to aptitude or (heaven help you if you're forced to use it) dselect.

I am kinda curious as to why Sun is romancing an offshoot of Debian in preference to Debian itself. It can be very convincingly argued that Debian is the most stable, best tested, most complete system available anywhere.

That's a good question. Going with Debian would be the best choice, but perhaps Sun wanted to make a bigger splash by going for the "hottest" Debian derivative today, that being Ubuntu. So it's not the best choice, but still an excellent one. Heck, they could have chosen Nexenta if they wanted the best of both worlds.
