Java was designed for small appliances
Lets clear this up. Java was not developed for servers. It was intended to be used on small appliances like the new media computers out of Finland. Microsoft's antitrust violation was about Java which was being deployed through the Netscape Browser.

Microsoft was behind the probaganda regarding Java being slow on the desktop. It is still disparaging Applets. But the battle has been lost. Java remains the first language learned by students. It just isn't going away. It has been proven on mainframe computers and servers. That proof means there is little risk in deploying on the desktop. You will be assimulated.
