Hog?
Be aware that you can convert Java to C so the argument that Java is a Hog implies that C is a hog. Its a matter of the skills of the coder IMO or the JVM when not converted. (of course we are chatting simple programs and not enterprise development here) Visual Basic is a nice candidate for Hog. But lets not go there. I don't know any VB coders any more - do they exist? (how were enterprize aps ever deployed with VB) Not relevant anyway. Can VB be converted to C?

Java can suffer from its virtual machine. If the VM is slow then so is Java. This is the reason why Sun provides the VM for Microsoft products and the reason that Microsoft has been forced out of the JVM business. It is not in Microsoft's monopoly protection interest to have a speedy JVM but it is in the share holders interest and in the consumers interest because that opens up more applications for the products Microsoft's OS's run on. Does WinCE have a JVM. If not then that is the next killer application for this OS product.

Do Microsoft's OS products run well on multi-core machines from AMD and INTEL? These machines clock slower than machines in the past and rely on the code for speed. That code must make use of threads and be thread safe. Java was built with multi-core in mind and it is hard not to build an application that can not take advantage of this new hardware. So things like OpenOffice will run faster on the new hardware than MicrosoftOffice. I suspect Vista has been delayed because its a piglet on the new multicore machines.
