I think we'll always disagree
Firstly, I'm not convinced the advent of PC's really made computing cheaper.

Secondly, I'm not entirely sure we are on the same page with regard to what a mainframe is. You seem to bordering on what I consider mainframe prehistory. I think you will find the term mainframe only came into use after the advent of minicomputers, that is, a 70's on kind of thing. At that point in time, there were large numbers of users of a mainframe (unless it was something like a cray) as well as large amounts of data to crunch.

As far as the rest of your post, it's false. IBM was not being greedy all by themselves with respect to a new OS, they worked on it with Microsoft, and then Microsoft bailed on them to release Windows. FYI, OS/2 as it was, was far far more stable and actually 32 bit before Windows was.

So, please get your history straight.
