What? Are you kidding?
""Things were cheaper on mainframes? I'm not sure what world you live in? Mainframe development is not cheap, and never was."""

No one said it was cheap .... just less expensive.... Before you had IBM compsting with DEC and a few other companies during the fifties and sixties... All computers were made to speacific specification for THAT company.... THEN after it was designed and made...... only TRhen were programs written for that specific company....

>>>Mainframe software is for huge numbers of users,<<<<

Are you kidding me .... these were made for large companies that had specific uses only not large numbers ... in those days only the operator could load programs and data from cards and tape.....If you had a project .. you did not go to your desk and start a program ... you wrote a papaer explaining what you want and need along with equations and then the programmers would write a program to do your job ... take your data ...and give you back some papaers with the answers.....

PC's allowed that power to become individual....instead... IBM was the BIG bad company.... Microsoft only became big AFTER IBM asked them to use their OS .. before that we had so many it was rediculous.... After a few years ... IBM got greedy again and wrote their own OS and tried to sell it with their computers and almost succeeded .... except it was not welll written and buggy also... PLUS it was a lot more expensive..... THATS Why DOS became so used .. it was in expensive compared to the others
