- The Question is "Who Own Windows"
-
Frankly it is too bad that M$ has to suffer getting permission to add or not add to their own operating system. M$ created, marketed, and is constantly improving their product. To bad in order for me to use Windows it HAS to be loaded with stuff from other vendors.
If I wanted RealPlayer, WinAmp, or some other media player I..uhh go get it.
If I want FireFox or some other browser I go get it. If I want to use Google (and I do often) I go get it. As it is; the first thing I do when I get a new PC for one of clients or myself is to re-format the hard drive to get rid of all of goop.
Playing fair to me (the user) is not forcing me to accept software from vendors I did not choose.
I happened to choose Windows today over Solaris, OSX, Linux, Unix, or any other flavor *NIX for the same reason I chose Windows years ago over Apple, Bea, DEC's OS?s, OS2, Cremenco, and all of the different flavors of CP/M. Windows was then and is now easy enough to use and application writers (including M$) write applications I care to use for Windows, and Windows runs on boxes I can afford.
An earlier poster mentioned Chevy bundling Delco Remy instead of Motorcraft; I say take most any of the current autos on the market and see how hard it is to replace the stereo system.
I guess what I'm saying is a product is only as successful as the marketplace says it is. By now even the most casual PC user is aware that M$ competitors have pooled their money and influence to have various municipalities around the world force M$ to let them onto the M$ desktop. Why aren?t these muni?s forcing the PC box vendors to sell an equal number of Linux machines or what ever; because the marketplace doesn?t want it? Even with it?s short comings Windows is preferred.
Apple is the sole provider of their machines hardware and OS. Why aren?t folks crying about them?
The crying is about playing on a playground that someone else built. If you can?t beat em, sue em.
Ok here is the deal pick any A-list celebrity, politician, or sports person. Since most of us don't make the kind of bucks these people make we can go to court and sue to live where they live and like they live. Why should it matter if we don't have their talent, luck, smarts, or razzmatazz. The point is let's just get the government to state they have a monopoly on the good life and we want it to. Pass a law or something.
Google wants special treatment; hell, we all want special treatment.
To all of the governments (especially mine): reduce taxes, fix global warming, help eliminate poverty, reduce crime, and get an alternative to gasoline; just let some body else design PC operating systems. I wonder how popular is the version of Windows XP without Windows Media Player.
I say why should M$ have to put Yahoo or Google in a list of available search engines. M$ wrote Windows they should be able to put their own search engine, browser, media player, office applications, anti-virus, firewall, or what ever.
Let me see, oh yeah, let?s tell Cisco they have to allow Checkpoint, SonicWall, and WatchGuard firewall blades into their Catalyst 6500 series chassis.
