Gentoo?
Is your distro gentoo? Cause my gentoo is about 2.4 gigs. Its has Gnome and KDE with all their extra glore and fluff (need to trim it sometime). Those two alone cost around 1-2 gigs.

If you just installed a compariable collection of stuff that come with your Windows install, then I think it can be around 500 megs... depending on how you optimize your compilation.

My friends XP is about a Gig, but that includes addons like theming and multiple desktops.

A VERY basic system can fit on a floppy. Its one of Linux's strengths, its very malleable to your needs and situation.
