Not to mention Glibc and gcc are released on such a basis that you can do a complete recompile of the entire system and get a substansial performance gain.
Since last year I have noticed vast improvements on how this old box of mine just gets faster with each new update for linux, whether it is a new kernel, headers or gcc and glibc.
