- No multi-core support WinCE is dead
-
Any developer not getting paid by Microsoft to develop for WinCE is taking on a loss.
Of course I am assuming that Microsoft has ignored the dual CPU multi core chips now being implanted into every modern phone device and applicance for the EU. The serious WinCE developer might check on that assumption. The rest of us... well even checking on the assumption is a waste of time because it is such a good one.
The new appliance and business computer chip sets operate at slower clock speeds but have higher performance when the software threads (take that to mean when it is written in Java or uses Linux for the OS). The slower clock speed means less heat and less power consumption. In fact we are likely to be back into the HP 100lx palmtop days where the device, when loaded with standard AA batteries, would operate for months with daily use instead of today's devices which operate, if you are lucky, for a week but no more. Tell me I am incorrect on this. I use a lot of Sony Erricson stuff - perhaps it is not a proplem with other manufacturers. But I doubt it.
Java was built with threading in mind in preparation for these devices and of course OpenOffice will be popular on them. OpenOffice will benchmark faster than anything WinCE on these devices. Linux was modified through Open Source contributions - primarily from Intel - to take advantage of the new power saving and higher performance hardware.
I suspect the news item discussed here is related to the fact that Java One starts on May16. The hearts and minds of all serious developers will be there. Microsoft hopefully will be as well. Let them play with the best instead of playing with themselfs and thinking they are the best. Is there even a JVM for WinCE?
