RE: Search prototype gets the picture
not really a new idea. Not even they way, how to set up a search, by a sketch.
IBM had, as a feature of its Content Manager, as well as an extent to its database DB2 , a product, called Query By Image Content , known to the insiders as QBIC.
The response to it wans not very overwhelming, seemed nobody wanted it really.
Technically they built several indexes on stored images, based on different techniques, like image average colour, distribution of colour over the picture, structural information, like directions of lines, frequency of distribution, and more.
Though a search for an orange might have given back a sunset picture - in conjunction with a text based search, eg on title, gave very good matches.
As there was no commercial outcome, the product is now longer available since 2003 (?)
