Amplification
OS/2 started as a joint development of both Microsoft and IBM. The other OS that is referenced is VAX but it is there only because a VAX developer was on the team that helped develop OS/2. There is no VAX code involved, at least to my knowledge.

IBM and Microsoft went their separate ways when Microsoft insisted on building the GUI into the kernel. IBM refused because of the stability problems involved with this which allowed bad coding of applications to crash the system. Despite their differences and the fact that they eventually went their separate ways, they both initially released OS/2. IBM called it simply OS/2. Microsoft called it Windows OS/2-NT. When initially released each could run applications written for the other. Then Microsoft abandoned the HPFS which is basically self-defragging and developed the NTFS. This and additional changes destroyed compatibility between the OSes.

OS/2 (IBM) became a stable, multitasking, multithreading OS with excellent support for legacy software and a small resources requirement. I recently increased my OS/2 based computer from 64Mb so that I could run Mepis Linux. I am running eComStation, which is the latest available client version of OS/2, unless you subscribe to IBM's software support which then allows you to buy Warp 4 "convenience pack" These are essentially identical client versions of OS/2 Warp for eBusiness.)

Windows OS/2 NT became simply NT. Compatibility with OS/2 was destroyed by the time NT 4.0 was released. Current releases of Windows are all based on the original NT, which was OS/2.

Windows prior to 95 was just a GUI running on top of a DOS. It ran much better on Digital Research DOS than on Microsoft's DOS if you reinstalled the DRDOS memory manager and disk cache which the Microsoft "SETUP" application replaced with Microsoft's versions.

That WIN95 was also a GUI on DOS was given emphasis by reports of Caldera (yeah, they're SCO now.) replacing the MS DOS in WIN95 with DRDOS. Supposedly it became more stable.

I'd like to include references, but they are on a hard drive that has passed on. Any good researchers can probably reconstruct them.
