Microsoft Integration
Over the long haul, the company hopes that AdCenter will prove more adept at targeting advertisements to the individual user,

...

It's expected to announce this week that it has scooped up Massive, a company that serves up advertising to slots within video games

Targeting ads to PC users is one of the things that Microsoft certainly should be able to do better than anyone else. After all, they have access to all of the user's files.

For instance, some of that investment into AI might let MSWindows and MSOffice deduce that the user is having an extramarital affair and (taking advantage of the tight integration of MSIE) suggest that MSAdcenter feature ads for divorce lawyers, contraceptives, inexpensive nearby hotels, etc.

That's the kind of value that Microsoft's integrated software stack can offer. Nobody else can touch it.
