The online advertising business is large and growing.
And many of the services which bring people to the advertising compete in part on the quality of the software used to perform the service.
Microsoft doesn't lack confidence in the company's ability to create effective software.

The high expense barrier to entering the competition also looks favorable to Microsoft. The number of companies Microsoft will have to excel is limited, and Microsoft can out-invest most if not all of them when necessary.

So this does look like a good market, in fact a necessary market for Microsoft to enter.

The problem is, much of the competition is also based on content, and Microsoft is correctly wary of trying to become a content company.

A partnership with a content company like Yahoo would to me be more effective.
Of course, Microsoft did not follow this same advice about AV and AS: hire a specialist company and stay out of such daily activities as are required by the business.
The company probably won't follow what I think is the best course in this case either.
