Checks and Balances
Wall Street is a confidence meter. It responds to potential not
status quo. It acts as a balance to more prosaic market forces. Is
it right or wrong? Who cares. It is what it is and it will have it's
effect regardless of our opinions. To say it's wrong does little to
negate the effect and does more to register a lack of
understanding. Microsoft can credit (in part) the stock market
for it's meteoric rise to the top. It placed disproportionate
confidence in horizontal markets and open architecture. The
markets have discovered that was fine for toasters and
automobiles and almost everything that came before.

Personal computers broke that mold. They are the first
accessible form of kinetic technology. Stasis is over.

I'm reminded of the zen parable. How does the monk get the
ship into the bottle as challenged by his master. After years of
trying, the master conceeds the answer - "there is no ship, there
is no bottle". As computers usurp our media and work tools, will
it be any real surprise when the the computer further morphs
into the toaster and the automobile as well. Stakes are too high
for one platform.

As one who has repeatedly brought up the market share
argument when championing the PC cause?how is it this
inviolate market wisdom is somehow wrong now. Perhaps it was
always circumstantial, cyclical and hopelessly fickle.

Perhaps, in choosing the wrong criteria for choice, you and many
others, have hitched your wagon to the wrong horse. Either way,
the only vote you'll ever have is your own.
