Wall Street wrong again
Wall Street wants short term profits at the expense of future growth. Companies (including Sun) are penalized for investing in products that will make money for them. When dividends - if offered - are not affected by such investments, anyone buying stock should approve.

Analysts also ignore what companies are doing in favor of a scenario they invent.

Microsoft announces:
"However the company forecast sharply lower earnings for both periods, saying it planned to step up its investments, particularly in Internet services that compete with Google and others."

and clarifies:
"As for the competition with Google, Ballmer said that one of the keys is having better technology to serve up advertising. The company is in the process of transitioning its search engine from the former Overture service, now owned by Yahoo, to Microsoft's own AdCenter engine. The company will also need to bulk up on both development talent and the servers needed to run such services, Ballmer said. "

That's a competition in advertising-supported search. Has nothing to do with the main company workhorses, Windows and Office. Though I expect Microsoft will add ancillary conveniences without changing the business model.

Says an analyst, consulting the zeitgeist or maybe just his own attitude:
"Maynard said that the software maker's move 'directly reflects the threat of software as a service and online business models to Microsoft's legacy, PC-centric franchise.'"

Difficult when Wall Street, which is a major source of business capital, is both aggressively ignorant and opposed to investment in businesses.
