UN has no spine unfortunately.
I agree the UN would remove the focus point that the US is but unfortunately, it has no spine and is overwhelmed by buerocrats. They took one bomb and all left the country.

I wish the UN could really serve as a world government but it really us just a coalition of a bunch of soft-headed folks, further constrained by various countries national interests. If it had been left up to the UN, Saddam would still be in power, still funding suicide bombers, still gassing and mass murdering his own people and still providing a rich soil for terrorists to grow in.

Under a brief US tutelage, Iraq, like Japan and Germany has a chance to grow into an independent democrasy. In 10 years it will probably be sticking its finger in our eye like Germany does on a regular basis. Iraq will no more be a client state of the US than Germany is today.
