Quoting:
"Now at Sun, he'll [Mr. Green] oversee a massive attempt to make Sun's software relevant and profitable by making it free and open-source."

If something is free its cost is $0, right?
You can multiply $0 by very large numbers without producing a change in profits.

After each losing quarter, expect Sun's management to keep talking about the company's brilliant future. then doing their determined best to prevent it from happening.
