You wish
"If he'd kept up with events at all, he'd know that
Linux fonts are - for the most part - now nicely
anti-aliased, the UI is faster, slicker than
U-know-what and available in several dozen
flavors, and that things "work" out of the box in
a very satisfactory way. "

"Actually, we're ALREADY THERE as to
usability"

That depends on what you're using it for and how
much time your're willing to spend to get it work
right.

Judging from your comments it would seem that you
know very little about the workings of Linux and
are just willing to accept the crap that is handed to you.

Been there, done that, bottomline font support is poor. There are very few to choose from to begin with and all the antialiasing the world can't change that. The UI can get bogged and crash using KDE or GNOME. And please don't talk about being slick. Kde and gnome are the most confusing Gui's there are. Stuff is everywhere and very few menu items are logically placed. The other windowing UIs are jokes.

"Better yet, he'd know that for several years,
now, you could install a desktop/workstation
system without a THOUGHT of recompiling!
He hasn't bothered to find out, or he's a flat-out
troll, as we surmise."

I've known that for several years. Also I've
known that it took several years for basic
hardware support to show up as part of the kernel
and the intallation(e.g USB support?)Pretty pathetic if you ask me. As just a workstation or
server it's ok since fonts, video, sound etc is
not that important. But as a desktop that a power user would like, it just plain disappoints.
Simple customization is a chore. It's easy to call someone a troll because they disagree with you but you have not rebutted any statement I made. All you did was spew worthless gibberish.

"Well, I agree with some of the above, but the
KERNEL NEED NEVER be user-friendly, the
UI shoould be, and I'd suggest the slower rate
of desktop adoptions are due to the rather
modest MARKETING being done for Linux
(what, just IBM and Dell, right?) "

I don't think you live on Planet earth. Since you don't know that Linux is a long way from
being a true desktop competitor to MS.
