He's a troll, Sam.
That doesn't mean he hasn't tried Linux, or as
a Linux newbie/Windows-only user didn't
become disenchanted that there was no
freakin' Clippy, but I would think that, if he felt
SO strongly about it, he would at least be
knowledgeable. (I can be downright disgusted
by Windows "features" and the continuing
antics of M$, and mouth off about it frequently,
but I know whereof I speak. I have to.)

If he'd kept up with events at all, he'd know that
Linux fonts are - for the most part - now nicely
anti-aliased, the UI is faster, slicker than
U-know-what and available in several dozen
flavors, and that things "work" out of the box in
a very satisfactory way.

Better yet, he'd know that for several years,
now, you could install a desktop/workstation
system without a THOUGHT of recompiling!
He hasn't bothered to find out, or he's a flat-out
troll, as we surmise.

You said,
This is a problem that Linux will have to
overcome to get on the desktop, Linus won't
make the kernel user friendly if it means
sacrificing stability, security or overall
cleaness (right word???), which is an
admarable trait but at the same time
something that will slow the linux adoption
rate. In the end he should get a very very slick
product.

Well, I agree with some of the above, but the
KERNEL NEED NEVER be user-friendly, the
UI shoould be, and I'd suggest the slower rate
of desktop adoptions are due to the rather
modest MARKETING being done for Linux
(what, just IBM and Dell, right?)

Actually, we're ALREADY THERE as to
usability. I would suggest that inasmuch as
Linus is concerned solely with the kernel,
what he does with it is only part of the Linux
story (as he prefers) and has little to do with
usability. All the warm 'n fuzzy eyecandy, apps
and usability features that now make SuSE,
Mandrake and RedHat such a joy to use are
linked to - but separate from - Linus' kernel
work which deals largely with performance
and kernel features.

I think I have a much more optimistic view of
present Linux usability than yours.
