Linux Process Explanation
2.4 was the last "stable" line.

2.5 was a development kernel all sorts of things were tried out and added on to 2.4. 2.5 was not for production use.

When Kernel 2.6 was started there was a feature freeze on a set of 2.5 features. Nothing new was to be added the goal was to make sure everything worked together, worked well, and worked well together.
When released 2.6 will include a lot of new features that were not in 2.4 but were added in the 2.5 development kernel. So nothing in 2.6 is new, it was available in 2.5. Stuff in 2.6 is new for being in a stable release of the kernel as it was not in 2.4.

Odd numbered kernels X.[13579] are development branches. They should be used only on systems where a spectacular failure can be tolerated.

Even numbered kernels X.[02468] are stable branches and are the ones that are supposed to be deployed on production systems.
