I think he stopped existing development to focus on it
Actually, I believe the story with that was that he was stopping the development of new features (some had already been added, probably in 2.5) and having them focus on hardening what they had. Stabilizing the kernel will go a long way to making it an even bigger player in mission-critical enterprise systems, which I think was his reasoning.

We may see some distros become "true GUI OSes", though most likely for home users, desktops, and small business servers. I doubt, though, that the ones for high-end servers will go that way for a while, if at all. In systems like that, a GUI is generally considered an unnecessary waste of disk space, RAM space, and processing time. I think most sys admins would prefer the GUI to be deatchable, to maximize their resources.

Just my 2.9 cents (before taxes).
