I wouldn't say they are allergic to competition

I would say they are allergic to playing well with others. Through competition I think this will change.

Would it not be a good thing if MS began making its products compatible with *nix, MAC, Etc? if they would develope a .NET framework for these products it would be possible.

Within 5 years i predict MS will begin developing management and possibly application software for competing platforms, especially once Linux consolodates itself (cause lets face it Linux has a fragmentation problem keeping it from being a real competitor to MS is some area's) and the whole SCO thing blows over.
