- Distinction of ?Search? ---?Precision and Recall?
-
The terms ?Consumer Search? and ?Corporate Search? are too superficial. The real distinction of ?Search? is in terms of ?Precision and Recall?. The same information seeker acts as ?Consumer? in some instances and as ?Corporate Worker? in some other instances.
The solution lies, not in offering different solutions to the different roles an information seeker plays but in providing a search method that is simple to start with and is capable of adapting and evolving as the need gets sophisticated and exacting.
Such solutions involve A ?Query Formulation and Refinement with or without Natural Language Processing? and B ?Meta-tagging Content and Information Sources by users and / or experts?
NLP is too imprecise but appeals to users---technologists and corporate executives alike. There are many less glamorous but useful intermediate solutions based on A and B above.
?Navigation Diagram?.describes?..? ----In stead of describing what the search engine has done, it could ask user to describe what he or she wants in more precise terms on which corporate search algorithm can act. This is typical of doing what ?the search engine? can and expecting the user to figure out! A and B mentioned above provide basic solutions that can evolve.
?Yet the search software used in most enterprise has a more complex user interface, which is "bereft of soul," ---- The complexity of user interface is neither an attraction nor a drawback. The interface has to be flexible to capture with sufficient precision what the user wants to specify and the search algorithm must be able to provide minimal ranked list of sources with full recall, and that is eminently possible.
