True, short term, if they did not offer it people would use Linux or pirate. They still might buy the Linux version and then install pirated XP and Office. For them, even an extra $50 is a lot of money. Well, I hope a significant number buy the Linux version AND actually use Linux.

More problematic for Microsft though, will be corporations and goverments demanding similar deals and switching to open source if Microsoft won't budge.

Open source is very viable in many cases right now.
