You are wrong
The only other OS that could compete with Windows 95 at the time was OS2 Warp

You are very wrong. I was using Linux before W95 came out because it had far better internet support than Win3.1 so Linux was out there and very competitive.

I also worked for a company about 5 years previous to W95 coming out that had nothing but MacOS on all of its desktops so Mac was out there and very competitive.

Windows gained marketshare because they did everything right:
1. They improved their OS technically (Win3->Win9X->XP were each huge technological leaps... Vista... not so sure yet).

2. They catered to the companies that sold PCs. While Apple was doing everything it could to make it difficult to buy a Mac and Linux had no direction at all, Microsoft realized that it wasn't going to be the end user choosing an OS, it was going to be the PC resellers. They realized right, everyone else realized wrong.

3. They made sure that their overall package worked well in the business environment. Truthfully, Macs probably would have worked well too but Apple couldn't condescend to dealing with businesses, ugh, they aren't artistic!! Linux, at the time, didn't have any sort of the infrastructure required to deal with businesses so they too failed.

Windows gained marketshare because they did everything right, not because they didn't have any competition.
