...a set of mostly open and proprietarily extensible standards set by a for-profit, Redmond, VA corporation that drives the development, convergence [a.k.a., monopoly] and adoption of it's own products who sells software that uses the standards.

If MS totally gives up rights to their OpenXML format to a concortium, I will actually give it serious thought. Considering that their browser still doesn't comply with W3C and other standards (PNG and CSS jumps readily to mind) there is fear, uncertainty and doubt in my mind. I kind of figured that if you are going to set some international standards, you should start by complying to international standards.

Maybe it's just me. After all, I am a self-described hater of most things Microsoft which aparently means that, having aired my opinions, my opinions can no longer be trusted as much as those who hold opinions but do not air them. Go figure.
