Like I said before
ODF should be used for documents like IGES is used for CAD.
Every CAD system out there can convert or read a file that is in IGES format. ODF should exist for that same purpose. You shouldn't be forced to work in ODF but it should be converted to ODF for archival purposes and data transfers to non-windows destinations.
