Dude, relax...
You sure seem to get your ******* in a bunch. Now let's look at your issues one at a time.

1. "25 different versions". Some people see this as a drawback, others see it as a strength. Bottom line is the only time it's a drawback is when applications work on one and not the other.

2. "Goofy application installer". If the Windows application installer were so great, you wouldn't have products like WISE Installer and InstallShield. Since neither Wise Solutions or Macrovision seem willing to step up to the plate, an open source group is going to have to at some point. The "make install" is pretty easy, but most end users just want to double click on something and hit "next" a few times to install software.

3. "The window of opportunity is gone". I don't believe that, and neither should you. Microsoft was an extremely focused company and it took them years to be the domininant player. They also started on the desktop and moved to the server room. Linux, on the other hand, started on the server and moved to the desktop. Look at how long it took for Microsoft to gain acceptance in the server room (NT 4.0 SP3) and give Linux that long to gain acceptance on the desktop. Since Microsoft was founded in 1979 and Windows NT 4 Service Pack 3 was released in 1997, that's 18 years. Linus Torvalds started working on the Linux kernel in 1991. Based on that, you shouldn't expect widespread acceptance of Linux onthe desktop until 2009. Recently I made a post indicating that I thought 2010 was the year just by speculating on the .NET framework being ported to Linux. Looks to me like I was right on the money.
