They are not confusing. They are just a salesman tool. You ask for some receipe by nickname or want to find out about some fact in the history on Internet and there will be hundreds of results with prices of drinks in bars that you don't give damn about or books with "history" for sale (apparently very well written so you can buy them in bulk).
Now, you have to cut your way through this jungle. But confusing? Well that's obvious why they still exist.
