innovation needs talent, not numbers
I picked up on the same thing almost immediately. I think he was being very clever. He's found another way to put Linux in a pigeonhole - "oh sure, great little project, but it's a few hundred people at most and what about all these really important things that thousands can be involved in?"

If you go back to the original work on Windows NT you find the same atmosphere. A handful of people were responsible for the architecture of NT. Individual developers headed up small teams that worked on important subsystems. It was in some ways a "skunkworks" project inside Microsoft, which was still making its bread-and-butter off MS-DOS and Windows 3.1, and was struggling to find an answer to the OS/2 threat.

Anymore it seems like Bill uses Microsoft as though it were a cloud of locusts waiting to descend on a wheat field. Just show me a target, man, and I'll be all over it. It's true that his army can grab almost any good idea and bend it to fit Windows. No doubt he'd LIKE to have a few more of the "best and brightest" consider working at Microsoft and innovate in-house so he doesn't have to steal other peoples' ideas.

Somewhere in here there's an analogy to Imperial storm troopers vs. that bunch of rascally rebels...
