XML IS just like COBOL
"But the data model for XML is not well matched with today's languages."

Quite so, XML is well matched with yesterday's languages.

How much money will be wasted and how many systems will be botched before people realise that XML is fundamentally flawed and should be dropped? Why not save the money of customers and shareholders and leave the thing alone?

The whole problem with XML is that it maps pretty much directly to the hierarchical structure of a COBOL file description. Hierarchies are totally inadequate for dealing with real world data management problems. This is why such approaches to data management have been largely superceded by relational databases. The revival of this approach can only be attributed to ignorance and lack of education. Those who don't understand COBOL are doomed to repeat it.

Gates enthusiasm for XML makes MicroSoft look like a company in technological regression and certainly not an innovator.
