Once upon a time...
you'd buy a card and it came with documentation, maybe some sample code, and best wishes. Today you get a card and a boat-load of software and no documentation.
Somewhere there has to be a happy medium. I acknowledge the 3rd party restrictions mentioned, but I can see no rationale for not opening up the specs on the chips/cards. Better would be open source on their own software, maybe a developer community. The video players need to ask themselves, "What business am I in, hardware or software, and what actions best serves that business?"
