Yes there are plenty of alternatives, but...
Here's the thing that a lot of open source people don't seem to get.

If you are in the business of selling software, you HAVE to distinguish youreslf. Linux is great, but all distros are basically the same. Its a vanilla market, which works well for open source, but not commercial software.

I know people call this "lock-in", but I can't see why a for profit software maker wouldn't want some features of their products to be different, if they can legitimately add value.

Sure, maybe a lot of the stuff that Microsoft adds to Office can be of questionable value, however, there is onc feature that I admit that I'm starting to like, voice recognition.

In Office 2003, the voice recognition is actually very good, once trained, and for a so so typist like myself that doesn't like to type, well, the combination of a mouse, keyboard and voice recognition allows me to generate alot of documents documents in a way that I find very productive.

Unfortunately, I don't have the foggiest on how to set this up with OpenOffice on Linux, though on Windows, I could probably hook ViaVoice or something else.
