Microsoft could spend billions to tie things to Office or Windows
Because they stand to lose billions if the OS and office suite become comodities. Look for the tie-ins to continue. Windows to everything possible using .NET and other tricks. MS Office to Windows. MS Office to anything possible, such as the eBay deal and the Amazon deal. They will have some success with this, it will create more lock-in.

Right now, they are fighting an all out war to deny Linux/OpenOffice a critical mass.

Smart users will not take the bait.
